Julian Nagelsmann is the first trainer ever to sign a contract with a clothing sponsor. Sport Bild writes on Wednesday that the 33-year-old trainer of RB Leipzig has entered into a ‘long-term cooperation’ with the American sports brand Nike. It is not clear what amount Nagelsmann can expect annually through the sponsorship contract.

Collaborations between sports brands and players have been common for a long time, but so far there has never been a trainer who signed a sponsorship contract. The collaboration between Nagelsmann and Nike is historic in that respect, although Adidas is also working on an agreement with a trainer. Sport Bild writes that the German sports brand is currently negotiating a sponsorship deal with Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, but has not yet reached an agreement.

That is why Nagelsmann writes history with his sponsorship contract with Nike. It is not the first time that he has secured a place in the history books, because the current trainer of RB Leipzig was already permanently appointed at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at the age of 28 and thus became the youngest ever appointed trainer in the Bundesliga. Nagelsmann exchanged Hoffenheim for RB Leipzig a year ago and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, where he was also the youngest coach in history.

Nagelsmann joins an impressive group of football players sponsored by Nike. Among others, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Virgil van Dijk, Harry Kane, Philippe Coutinho, Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are under contract with the American sports brand. Nike is also the clothing sponsor of RB Leipzig, Nagelsmann’s employer.
