Edouard Mendy is undergoing a medical examination by Chelsea tonight to complete a transfer, as the usually well-informed journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi knows from RMC Sport via Twitter. The Senegalese goalkeeper comes from Stade Rennes for a maximum of thirty million euros and will sign a five-year contract with the English superpower. Mendy thus becomes the most expensive outgoing transfer ever in Ligue 1. The old transfer record is held by Petr Cech, who left Stade Rennes for Chelsea in 2004 for 13 million.

Mendy’s transfer to Chelsea had been in the pipeline for some time. Almost all media in France and England have been counting on a deal between Chelsea and Stade Rennes for weeks, but now there would be an agreement on the table. The Blues pay a fixed transfer fee of 24 million euros for the 28-year-old keeper, an amount that can rise to a maximum of 30 million euros through all kinds of bonus constructions.

Bouhafsi reports that Mendy will undergo a medical check-up in Berlin by Chelsea due to the corona restrictions in England. After all, travelers traveling to the island from France must first be quarantined for fourteen days to prevent the spread of the corona virus. However, Germany is not on the list of countries subject to such an obligation, which may allow Mendy to join the selection of manager Frank Lampard more quickly.

That the arrival of Mendy at Chelsea is desperately needed, was shown again last Sunday during the league match against Liverpool. The Londoners lost at home 0-2 to the reigning champion, partly due to a hideous blunder by Kepa Arrizabalaga, who shot the ball against the rushing Sadio Mané in the second half and thus led to a goal against.
