Yvon Mvogo was Saturday’s topic of conversation after PSV’s oppressive victory over FC Emmen (2-1). The goalkeeper gave the visitors a goal in the closing stages by shooting a return ball from Philipp Max. Thanks to a late goal from Maximiliano Romero, the three points stayed in Eindhoven in the end, but it was mainly about Mvogo afterwards. After all, it wasn’t his first mistake.

In his official debut against FC Groningen (1-3 win) Mvogo also blundered by introducing a countergoal with a wrong pass on Jorrit Hendrix. Roger Schmidt had to answer some questions about Mvogo on Saturday, also because he wanted to have a good goaltending goalkeeper and PSV therefore hired the Swiss two seasons from RB Leipzig. “He is a very good goalkeeper playing soccer. He has now made two mistakes in the first two games. That’s not easy for him, but we are still one hundred percent convinced of his qualities”, the German coach stressed.

“Mvogo was very unfortunate and afterwards also very disappointed, but now everyone is very happy for him with the victory. The team wanted to fight back after his mistake, that’s a matter of team spirit.” Schmidt emphasized that it had nothing to do with coordination between the players. “It was an innocent ball. I think Yvon’s thoughts were already with the game resumption and the ball will probably have bounced as well. Sometimes a situation like that happens. Yvon is a great goalkeeper. His start at PSV isn’t good, but we’re sure he’s going to show what he’s capable of”.

“He’s shown all the bad things for this season in the first two games, I guess.” Denzel Dumfries sees no reason to lose confidence in Mvogo. “I’m not going to lose him. I think it’s very unfortunate. I think the ball just bounced. It was just very bad luck. I think it’s terrible too. He doesn’t do it on purpose. He saved us fantastic in the first half and a couple of times in the second half. We’re very happy that he’s here and we have faith in him.”

Mvogo remains the first choice of Schmidt, who has compatriot Lars Unnerstall as an alternative. Third goalkeeper is the young Maxime Delanghe. Jeroen Zoet recently made a transfer to the Italian city of Spezia, while Hidde Jurjus joined KFC Uerdingen from the 3. Liga.
