FC Twente has removed Jahnoah Markelo from the selection until April 1. The reason for his disciplinary punishment lies outside the football field. The 18-year-old attacker will be playing and training with the club’s Under-21 team for the next two weeks.

“He does not yet know exactly what it means to be a professional football player,” says technical director Jan Streuer in conversation with TC Tubantia about Markelo, who made the switch from Ajax to FC Twente in 2019. “A young player can make mistakes, but it cannot be the case that we are the busiest with the youngest player in the selection,” emphasizes the sports director.

Markelo signed a professional contract until 2023 in October last year. This gave him a place in the first selection of the Enschede team. “After April 1, we will see whether he has understood the message, and whether he can return to the selection,” said Streuer.

The younger brother of Nathan Markelo made his debut in the first game in October last year with SV OSS’20 (0-2 win). Afterwards, he was on the bench in the Eredivisie duels with FC Utrecht and Vitesse, but there was no playing time.
