Georginio Wijnaldum is ‘finally’ ready to sign his rental contract with AS Roma, according to Fabrizio Romano. According to the transfer market expert, all financial folds have been ironed out and his current employer Paris Saint-Germain has given the green light for a loan of the midfielder. Only the paperwork stands in the way of a transfer from Wijnaldum to the Italian capital.

An agreement between PSG and Roma was already close, but according to Corriere dello Sport it was a financial sacrifice from Wijnaldum himself that sealed that. The 86-time the Dutch international was willing to give up on salary, as well as to waive certain bonuses that PSG still has to pay him. The clubs had already agreed on an arrangement whereby Roma would take over sixty percent of Wijnaldum’s salary, but the remaining amount was initially still too much for i Giallorossi. The fact that the Dutchman also waived the bonuses made the deal a lot more favorable from a Paris perspective.

It was already clear that the Romans will initially rent Wijnaldum for a year and that an option to buy is included in the deal. Should the 31-year-old midfielder play in more than half of Roma’s official matches next season and the formation of coach José Mourinho make it to the Champions League, then that purchase option will be mandatory. The Italian club must then transfer an amount of approximately ten million euros.

In the tweet in which Romano gives the update on Wijnaldum, he adds his characteristic catchphrase ‘here we go (soon)‘ to. It will be a loaded case for Romano, as the usually reliable transfer market expert in a podcast of 433 acknowledged that he had made his biggest mistake in reporting about the Dutchman. Last summer, Romano reported that Wijnaldum would go to Barcelona ‘anyway’, but the veteran opted for a lucrative contract with PSG at the last minute. Les Parisiens are close to signing Renato Sanches (Lille OSC) to replace Wijnaldum.
