Timon Wellenreuther's contract extension at Feyenoord is completely in the bag. The Rotterdammers announced the new contract, which is valid until mid-2027, on their official channels on Wednesday morning.

The German goalkeeper had a contract in Rotterdam-Zuid that would expire at the end of next season, but he is adding two years to it. Wellenreuther says he is happy with the new deal.

“The last two seasons have been fantastic,” the goalkeeper is quoted on the club website. “The support from the public, the trust I feel from the club and the staff: those were all important reasons for me to want to stay at Feyenoord.”

“I have already experienced many great moments here, including playing in the cup final last season, and I look forward to achieving even more success in the coming years,” Wellenreuther looks to the future.

Whether the 28-year-old goalkeeper will be the first choice under the bar at Feyenoord next season is still the question. Wellenreuther has previously indicated that he wants to be the first goalkeeper from after the summer, if necessary at another club. By extending his contract, Feyenoord seems to be sending a signal to the German.

Meanwhile, Justin Bijlow is also still a regular at De Kuip. The 26-year-old Dutch international, who is currently the third goalkeeper at the European Championship in Germany, will not be jumping to act as a reserve goalkeeper behind Wellenreuther. Bijlow, who can count on interest from the Premier League, may make a transfer this summer. A departure of his competitor does not seem to be a realistic option given the contract extension.

Italian interest

By signing Wellenreuther for a longer period, Feyenoord is reportedly beating out several big clubs. It was known that PSV was on the lookout for him, but according to Marlon Irlbacher of the German branch of Sky Sport Inter and AS Roma were also interested.

“Feyenoord, however, presented Wellenreuther with a clear vision of the future with a role as first goalkeeper. In addition, he will become one of the top earners,” writes Irlbacher.
