Watford expressed his support for Steven Berghuis on Thursday. The attacker has been threatened in recent weeks after he switched from Feyenoord to Ajax. Berghuis played for Watford in the 2015/16 season, which was shocked by the threatening statements.

“We are disgusted by the anti-Semitism following the transfer of former Hornet Steven Berghuis from Feyenoord to Ajax,” writes the club that was promoted from the Championship to the Premier League last season. “We support Steven and repeat our zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of discrimination at Watford, in football and in society.” Berghuis was under contract with Watford between 2015 and 2017 and was loaned out to Feyenoord in his final season, leaving him only one season for the English club.

During the practice match between Feyenoord and Werder Bremen, chants were heard in De Kuip earlier this month. “Hey Steven Berghuis, dirty dirty cancer Jew, hey Steven Berghuis, just drop dead”, was shouted by fans present. An objectionable banner went around on social media on which Berghuis is placed on a list with convicted criminal Martin van de Pol and crime reporter Peter R. de Vries, both supporters of Ajax who were murdered this year. In Rotterdam Crooswijk an anti-Semitic mural depicting Berghuis as a Jew during the Second World War was on display.
