There is also no place for Russia at the European Championship 2024. The Russian Federation (RFS) announced on official channels on Monday that UEFA has excluded the country from qualifying for the European final round. Russian teams and clubs are currently suspended ‘until further notice’ by UEFA because of the war with Ukraine, already banning the former Soviet Union from participating in the upcoming World Cup. The RFS may still appeal the verdict.

At the end of February, FIFA and UEFA confirmed in a joint statement that all national teams and clubs from Russia would be suspended indefinitely. As a result, Poland, which Russia had drawn in the semi-finals of the World Cup play-offs, automatically advanced to the final. The RFS reacted furiously to FIFA’s decision, calling it “a discriminatory decision”. “It mainly harms the athletes, their trainers and employees and above all millions of Russian and foreign fans. International sports organizations should protect them,” the Russian federation said.

Despite appeals from the RFS, the boycott continued unabated, resulting in exclusion from the European Championship in 2024. The draw for the qualification will take place on October 9 in Frankfurt and Russia will not be neglected. Before the RFS appeals, the association is first awaiting the fully substantiated verdict of the International Sports Tribunal (CAS), according to the statement on the website of the Russian association.

The most recent FIFA World Cup was played in Russia. In the summer tournament, France eventually emerged as the winner. Despite the war situation, Russia still ‘just’ intends to apply as organizer of the European Championship 2028 or 2032. President of the RFS Alexander Dyukov indicated at the end of March that he had already issued a statement of intent to UEFA, with which the Russian Federation has until April 12, 2023 to prepare the actual candidacy.
