Two Liverpool fans have committed suicide after attending the last Champions League final between their club and Real Madrid. On May 28, things went terribly wrong at the Stade de France in Paris. With several fans of the Reds this brought back memories of the 1989 Hillsborough drama, which killed 97 people.

Hillsborough Survivors Support chairman, Peter Scarfe, said: The Liverpool Echo know that the events at the Stade France ‘triggered’. Thousands of Liverpool supporters – including children and people with disabilities – were forced into cramped and dangerous areas before the game as the turnstiles remained closed. This is due to the fact that fake cards were in circulation. This resulted in long queues.

According to Scarfe, for many fans present, the situation in Paris was very reminiscent of the Hillsborough drama on April 15, 1989. In both cases, oppression was lurking. The crowd was then sprayed with tear gas and pepper spray by the French police. After the match, many were reportedly beaten and robbed by gangs. The kick-off for the final was delayed more than 30 minutes to get everyone still outside in the stadium. The Guardian reported earlier that the supporters were blamed for the delay. Scarfe: “Just like 33 years ago, there were again false accusations against our supporters.”

Two people, aged 52 and 63, took their own lives after witnessing the events in Paris. Scarfe said there have already been three suicides among Liverpool fans this year. “One of them was just before the remembrance day of the Hillsborough disaster because the person did not want to experience that day again. The other two suicides were therefore due to ‘retriggers’ due to the drama in Paris.” Scarfe also reported that people had to undergo therapy after the misery at the Champions League final. “It’s good that we can do this, but it shouldn’t be necessary.”
