Henk ten Cate thinks that the selection of Mats Wieffer for the Dutch national team may come a little too early. into Friday night Ziggo Sports Football Café the final selection of the Dutch national team for the European Championship qualifying matches with France and Gibraltar was reviewed. Ten Cate did find the calling up of debutant Wieffer a surprise.

“That is very surprising”, begins the former trainer of Ajax, among others, about selecting the Feyenoord midfielder. “I don’t know if it might be just a little too fast, but it is very nice for such a boy, of course, who will play in Feyenoord 1 for the first time this year and then suddenly be selected for the big Dutch national team.”

Ruud Gullit responds to this. “And also by coincidence, right?”, he refers to the fact that Wieffer has been in the spotlight in recent months as a result of Quinten Timber’s injury. “And not attracting Zerrouki from FC Twente,” adds Jan van Halst. Gullit continues: “I think it also has to do with the fact that Koeman wants to give such a player a boost, to play at a higher level and with all good players around him.”

Mats Wieffer is going through a stormy development. Last season he played with Excelsior in the Kitchen Champion Division, now he is fighting for the national title with Feyenoord. In his first months with the leader of the Eredivisie, he mainly had to make do with raids, but after the winter break, the 23-year-old midfielder conquered a basic place. So far he has played 26 official matches for Feyenoord, in which he scored 2 times and provided 4 assists.
