Rudi Garcia will leave Olympique Lyon next summer, the coach announced at the press conference after the 2-3 lost game with OGC Nice. Les Gones missed a Champions League ticket due to the defeat and the 57-year-old trainer was already in possession of an expiring contract. Garcia apparently cannot go through one door at Lyon with sports director Juninho Pernambucano, writes L’Équipe.

“I wanted to leave the club with a Champions League ticket and it didn’t work out. This is the worst case scenario. We were too vulnerable to the standard situations, which is normally our strongest point. I will not be here next season. I decided that for myself a little longer ago, because I cannot continue to work at Lyon under the current conditions. This is not the place and the time to explain it, but I will not go any further ”, he signs L’Équipe from the mouth of Garcia.

“If the president does propose something to me tomorrow, I will not be a candidate to succeed myself,” Garcia emphasized. Lyon finished fourth in Ligue 1, behind Lille OSC, Paris Saint-Germain and AS Monaco. “There is no explanation. This is also my fault. It’s awful. Amazing, that’s the word. We could not reach our level on the ball. We weren’t aggressive enough. Apart from Rayan Cherki, the substitutes did not bring anything, the level even dropped after the changes. ”

Garcia has been at the helm of Lyon since October 2019. Les Gones finished seventh last season, while the employer of the also departing Memphis Depay competed for the national title for a long time this year. Garcia previously worked at Saint-Étienne, Dijon, Le Mans, Lille, AS Roma and Olympique Marseille.
