Marcus Rashford has expressed his anger on Twitter about ‘at least 70 racist messages’ he received on social media after the lost Europa League final. Manchester United lost on Wednesday in Gdansk, Poland after penalties from Villarreal and afterwards the inbox of the England international was filled with hate messages. In particular, a racist message from a math teacher finds Rashford incomprehensible.

“So far I have counted at least 70 racist comments on my social media accounts,” Rashford writes on Twitter. “Good luck to those who are trying to make me feel even worse than I am doing right now.” A hate report in particular causes outrage at Rashford. “I am more outraged that one of the abusers who left a mountain of monkey emojis in my DM is a math teacher with an open profile. He teaches children !! ”

It is not the first time that Rashford has been treated racially online. Online racism has long been a major problem in English football. At the end of April, all English football clubs therefore decided to boycott social media for a weekend. Clubs in the Premier League, Championship, Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship showed no online activity for a weekend to emphasize that platforms like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook need to do more against online misconduct.

The final between Manchester United and Villarreal ended in a 1-1 draw after ninety minutes. Because no goals were scored in extra time, it ended in an insane penalty shootout. All twenty field players scored, after which the goalkeeper of Villarreal also hit and David de Gea missed.
