PSV suffered a defeat in the Europa League on Thursday evening. In their own Philips Stadium, AS Monaco was too strong with 1-2 due to a late goal. Myron Boadu opened the score for Monaco, after which Cody Gakpo made it 1-1 and Sofiane Diop passed the verdict on PSV just before time. The loss of Noni Madueke and Gakpo made the defeat even more sour. With the win, Monaco takes the lead in Group B, with seven points.

The most striking man of the first half was without a doubt Boadu, who appeared three times on his own for keeper Joël Drommel. The striker made the most of the opportunity the first time. After a long ball from Caio Henrique, Boadu escaped the attention of Armando Obispo in the penalty area, after which he finished with one touch of the ball through Drommel’s legs. The other two times, Obispo was in charge of the attacker who left AZ. In minutes 40 and 45 Boadu threatened to attack Drommel, but Obispo made a good intervention from behind at the last moment.

Nevertheless, the players left the field with whistles from the stands when the halftime signal sounded. The Eindhoven team, surprisingly with Carlos Vinícius in the striker instead of Eran Zahavi, barely got a foothold. Monaco was already threatening several times before the 0-1; after the opening goal, the visitors collapsed, after which PSV struggled in the small space. Marco van Ginkel and Cody Gakpo scored, but Monaco played the remainder of the first half without serious problems. The visitors will have been particularly disappointed with the opportunities that Boadu did not take. One and a half minutes after the break, Vinícius created a great opportunity after a clever assumption in the penalty area, but goalkeeper Alexander Nübel saved.

Shortly afterwards, long shots from Gakpo and Vinícius were also a prey for Nübel. It was clear that PSV was getting ready in the search for an equalizer. It finally arrived after less than an hour. Shortly after PSV had to deal with a setback – Madueke was injured – Gakpo sent a pass to Vinícius, who was just outside the penalty area. The striker took the ball poorly, but this created a shooting opportunity for Gakpo, who did not hesitate for a moment: 1-1. Moments later, however, Gakpo also retired with an injury. Substitute Yorbe Vertessen missed a good chance to make it 2-1. PSV wanted to win the match, but got the cover in the nose: the sliding Diop took care of the 1-2 in minute 89.
