Michael Laudrup criticized UEFA the day after Denmark’s lost European match against Finland (0-1). According to the former footballer, the European Football Association should have made a different choice when midfielder Christian Eriksen became unwell on the field. UEFA gave the Danish players two choices: whether to finish the game in the evening, or at noon on Sunday morning. The players unanimously chose the first option. According to Laudrup, the game should never have been played out on Saturday evening.

When the Danish Football Association DBU reported on Saturday evening after about an hour after Eriksen’s resuscitation that the Internazionale player was conscious, the players from Denmark and Finland decided to resume the game after a delay of almost two hours. “The players were given a choice that is not a choice,” Laudrup told the Danish broadcaster TV2. “The option was: play tonight, or Sunday at 12:00. I don’t think this is a choice. UEFA should have just said: ‘We don’t play anymore tonight, then we’ll see what the options are later’.”

Finland went on to win 0-1 with a goal from Joel Pohjanpalo. Also because goalkeeper Lukas Hrádecky turned a not too well shot penalty from Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg. “I think it’s wrong to have to make a decision so soon after an emotional event,” Laudrup continues. “Someone should have said, ‘We won’t play tonight’.” Laudrup himself made 104 appearances for the Denmark national team and worked as an assistant head coach of the Danish national team between 2000 and 2002.

“I respect that our team and the Finns have managed to continue playing,” said Laudrup. “But when something like that happens, the players are full of emotion. Then they don’t have the overview to make important decisions. Then there has to be someone who says: ‘We stop’.” The Danish Football Association confirmed in an official statement on Sunday morning that Eriksen has regained consciousness. There has also already been contact with his fellow internationals of the Danish team, so it sounded from Copenhagen.
