Patrick van Aanholt has fallen victim to racist statements. The Crystal Palace defender was given an opportunity to shoot his team to victory in the Premier League game with Manchester United (0-0) in the final phase on Wednesday evening, but failed face to face with goalkeeper Dean Henderson. It led to Van Aanholt receiving racist texts via Instagram from someone who saw a bet lost.

Van Aanholt was released against United in the final minutes for goalkeeper Henderson, but shot the ball from the left side of the goal at the England international, after which the game ended in a goalless draw not much later. “One-on-one and you can’t score? Dombo ”, was sent to Van Aanholt. Followed by: “An odd of 3.60 for a first goal from Palace and you can’t score. You dog shit. You should have broken your neck, monkey. ”

The Crystal Palace defender, who takes the 13th place in the Premier League with his team, shared the messages via his own social media. “Why we kneel,” wrote the Dutchman. Van Aanholt participated in the entire game and is considered an important link within Roy Hodgson’s team on the left side of the defense. Jaïro Riedewald, who is also under contract with Palace, came on Wednesday evening half an hour before time for James McCarthy.

Van Aanholt is the umpteenth player in the Premier League who is being treated racially through social media. Meanwhile, clubs are begging for more action to combat such issues in the future. Last month, United attacker Anthony Martial was the target of racist remarks when he and his side got no further than a draw against West Bromwich Albion (1-1) and went down against Sheffield United (1-2). The Daily Mail even reported that the French attacker was offered security after both he and his wife Melani received death threats.
