Royal Antwerp is certainly not sitting still on the transfer market. Technical director Marc Overmars has sold Manuel Benson to Championship club Burnley, while Emanuel Emegha moves to Austria to play for Sturm Graz. The ex-Spartan came to only one duel the Great Old.

According to Belgian media, Burnley made an offer of four million euros for Benson last weekend. Whether that is the exact amount for which Benson will be taken over is still unknown, although it seems certain that Antwerp will make a profit on the winger. In 2019 Antwerp paid three million euros to Racing Genk for its services. Since then, Antwerp has attracted five more players who were more expensive than the 25-year-old Belgian. Toby Alderweireld and Vincent Jansen, among others, were attracted for more money.

Benson eventually played 68 official games for Antwerp, scoring eight times and providing ten assists. In the second half of the 2020/21 season, he was rented out to PEC Zwolle, although he did not score in thirteen matches. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a new adventure for me and I’ve heard a lot of good things about this club,” Benson said on Burnley’s website. Trainer Vincent Kompany is also happy with the arrival of his compatriot. “He is a hard-working player who will strengthen our squad. He is a specialist in one-on-one and a threat in the last part of the field.”

In addition to Benson, Emanuel Emegha also leaves last season’s number four. The ex-Spartan was brought to Antwerp in January this year, but did not live up to expectations. The nineteen-year-old attacker came to only one duel and there was no prospect of more playing time under Mark van Bommel. In Graz, Emegha signs a contract until mid-2026.
