Marc Overmars is delighted with the arrival of Steven Berghuis to Ajax. The attacker made his debut on Saturday in the friendly match against Bayern Munich (2-2), after he came over from Feyenoord for at least 5.5 million euros. In conversation with the General Newspaper Overmars explains why Ajax paid more than the amount of four million euros for which Berghuis could have been collected according to a contractual clause.
Feyenoord used a different interpretation of the buyout clause of four million euros and lawyers in De Kuip were already considering the case. “The fact that it was completed quickly and he could go out through the front door was more important to me than that we would pay five tons more or less,” explains Overmars. “The group went to Austria. According to RTV Rijnmond Feyenoord will initially receive four million euros. A guaranteed amount of 1.5 million euros will be added at a later stage. Due to a so-called performance bonus with regard to the Champions League, the total amount for the wing attacker can rise to 6.5 million euros. Feyenoord has also stipulated a resale percentage.
Overmars praises Berghuis’ enthusiasm. “He is very performance-oriented,” says the director of football affairs. “Every day he looks at the data. What have I done today? He wants and must be in the top three. And he also has that top sport mentality, which we also see at Dusan Tadic, for example. Only that many people do not have that image. him.
