MVV Maastricht has recovered from last Monday’s painful 3-0 defeat against Jong FC Utrecht. In their own Geusselt, Almere City FC won 1-0 on Saturday evening. Ruben van Bommel was the match winner on the side of MVV shortly before the half-time signal. Thanks to the victory, the club from Maastricht strengthens third place in the Kitchen Champion Division.

The Limburgers started aggressively and with offensive intentions in the duel with Almere City and that approach resulted in two chances in the first five minutes. However, a header from Rein Van Helden flew over the visitors’ goal and a shot from Sven Blummel went wide via a defender. In the twelfth minute, Koen Kostons missed a great chance when he stormed alone at Nordin Bakker. The Almere City goalkeeper was alert and kept his goal clean. MVV remained the dominant team in the remainder of the first half and in minute 43 it finally resulted in the opening goal.

Kostons, who again could only rely on Almere City’s goal, kept the overview this time. He served Ruben van Bommel to size and the eighteen-year-old attacker made no mistake up close: 1-0. The industrious Kostons again went alone to Bakker in stoppage time and even scored. However, the whistle had already been blown for offside and Kostons was shown a yellow card to continue despite this. MVV was only busy with one thing after the break: setting up attacks. In the first ten minutes after the break, Bakker managed to turn an attempt by Marko Kleinen and Ruben van Bommel did not take the ball well in a promising position.

Almere City came out of its shell a bit more and seemed to be level after an hour of play. Ilias Alhaft’s goal turned out to have been made in an offside position, so that the 1-0 score remained on the scoreboard. Just a minute later, Kostons was again stopped by Bakker, keeping things exciting in Maastricht. In the final phase, the necessary substitutions were made by both teams. For example, the accurate Ruben van Bommel went to the side. The many changes did not change the position. MVV crossed the 1-0 lead, thanks in part to a good save by Romain Matthys with a few minutes left on the clock, and including last season is already unbeaten in eleven home matches in a row.
