André Onana has given a personal statement about his expulsion from the selection of Cameroon. The goalie of Internazionale was still under the crossbar during the 1-0 loss against Switzerland, but was no longer in the selection for the meeting with Serbia (3-3) and that led to a lot of speculation. Onana has now clarified herself.

Various media have already reported that Onana disagreed with national coach Rigobert Song about how he should defend his goal. That seems to confirm the statement of the former Ajax player. “I did everything I could to find solutions to a situation that sometimes occurs in football, but there was unwillingness on the part of the other side. Sometimes you can’t come to an agreement. However, I always respect the decisions of the people responsible for the national team and the success of our country.”

Onana would also like to emphasize that there is absolutely no lack of patriotism. “I would like to mention my love for my country and the national team. I would also like to transfer all my strength to my teammates because we have shown that we can go far in this tournament. Playing for Cameroon has always been a privilege for me. All for the country, forever.”

It seems that Onana will not return to the Cameroon selection. After the draw against Serbia, Song stated that there was a small chance that the Inter goalkeeper would make his comeback during the World Cup, but Fabrizio Romano already indicated that that would not happen. Onana’s statement seems to confirm this, as the goalkeeper already wishes his teammates good luck. Without the Internazionale goalkeeper, Cameroon has only two keepers left: Devis Epassy and Simon Ngapandouetnbu. The former only played his sixth international match against Serbia.
