Lothar Matthäus hopes that Matthijs de Ligt will soon sign with Bayern Munich. The club icon of der Rekordmeister says to BILD that the club from Bavaria lacks a type like De Ligt in the defense and that they could therefore also use the Dutchman from Juventus.

According to several German media, De Ligt would be close to a transfer to Bayern and Matthäus, who still has a lot of influence within the Munich club, makes no secret of the fact that he would like the deal to come through. “He is a type Virgil van Dijk and can lead the defense of Bayern,” predicts the former midfielder. “He is one of the best central defenders in Europe and is also only 22 years old. Bayern can move forward with that for a while. If it goes through, it will be a super transfer for Bayern.”

The future of the the Dutch international is by no means certain. Juventus is open to a sale of De Ligt, but asks an amount of around eighty million euros for the mandekker. The club would not suffer a loss with this, since it transferred the same amount to Ajax in 2019 for the services of De Ligt. It is still unclear whether Bayern wants to meet the asking price, or whether it will end in negotiations. In addition, Chelsea is also interested in the services of the former Ajax player.

However, De Ligt himself would rather move to Bayern. The reigning German champions already wanted to bring the mandekker to the Allianz Arena in 2019, but De Ligt preferred a switch to Juventus at the time. The fact that the club has kept in touch all along is said to be a testament to the benevolence the stopper is looking for. Moreover, his buddies Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch – whom he knows from his time at Ajax – are an important factor.
