Marco van Basten cannot say he is a fan of Neymar. The analyst and former striker acknowledges that the Brazilian attacker is one of the best players in the world, but is disturbed by the mannerisms that he thinks Neymar too often displays. The current season at Paris Saint-Germain does not contribute to this, according to Van Basten.

Brazil will play against Serbia at the World Cup on Thursday evening and Van Basten will be asked about his opinion of Neymar in the run-up to that match. It is twofold. “Neymar is a great player and a spectacular player, but I think he is also spoiled at Paris Saint-Germain,” said the 1988 European champion during Studio WK 22 on NPO1. “He has been doing that more often in the last period. A big disadvantage to him. He can complain incredibly, but he is certainly among the best in the world.”

Imke Courtois agrees. The Belgian analyst also sat at the table with presenter Sjoerd van Ramshorst and acknowledges that she too is often disturbed by Neymar’s behaviour. “That is a figure that is more on the ground than that he is a football player. That is very annoying, but then again it is a world player. In any case, it is the important man in the Brazilian national team and is central with a free role That suits him.”

This season, Neymar has already scored eleven goals and nine assists in fourteen games in Ligue 1. He was also of value to PSG in the Champions League by scoring two goals in five matches. The star attacker is still stuck in the French capital until mid-2025, although he himself has an option to extend that commitment for another season. Whether he wants to, remains to be seen. There are more rumors that Neymar is not on good terms with teammate Kylian Mbappé.
