RB Leipzig goes with Real Madrid to the knockout phase of the Champions League. In a direct meeting in group F, Shakhtar Donetsk was settled, who also had a chance of a place in the last sixteen: 0-4. Christopher Nkunku, André Silva, Dominik Szoboszlai and Dani Olmo scored the goals in a well-filled Wojska Polskiego Stadium in Warsaw. On the first day of the Champions League season, Shakhtar still managed to win 4-1, but that slip was eventually corrected by Leipzig.

The formation from Ukraine knew that with a win it would go on to the eighth finals of the Champions League anyway and so an offensive-minded team was sent off. Lassina Traoré (ex-Ajax) had to take care of the goals as a striker and was supported in the back by Mykhaylo Mudryk, the 21-year-old top talent of Shakhtar. For Leipzig it was important to at least get a draw out of the fire. With former Heraclied Janis Blaswich under the bar, the Germans also had a basic player with a past in the Eredivisie.

Shakhtar immediately sought the attack, but after ten minutes was presented with the bill for the lack of organization in the rear. Timo Werner was allowed to shoot freely and the rebound of that shot was tapped in by Nkunku: 0-1. With that goal those Roten Bullen what they wanted and they retreated, waiting for the chance to strike again on the counter. Shakhtar didn’t know what to do with that attitude and so there was no chance of each other before half time.

In the second half, Leipzig only needed a few minutes to decide the game. After a genuine scrimmage in front of the goal, André Silva got the ball on the head and headed the ball in for the 0-2. In the end, the Germans ran through Dominik Szoboszlai, who outplayed the keeper and found an empty goal, and a nice shot into the far corner of Dani Olmo to 0-4. The East German formation therefore enters the knockout phase of the billion-dollar ball with Real Madrid, while Shakhtar can save the season in the Europa League.
