Barcelona cannot yet attract any players during the winter transfer period. Club president Joan Laporta said this in an interview with EFE Deportes. The Catalan club hopes that business can still be done, but needs the cooperation of the Spanish League to do so.

Last summer, Barcelona had to play various financial tricks to attract players. However, it is now no longer possible to pull a rabbit out of the hat, Laporta says. “The club is on its way back and can call itself financially sound, but according to LaLiga’s Financial Fair Play rules we are not allowed to sign new players,” complains the president of La Liga. los Azulgrana. “We are trying to convince LaLiga, together with a few other clubs, to be more flexible.”

The Spanish league leader has drawn up his own rules, but Laporta is not happy with that. “If certain things are arranged differently, Barcelona is able to strengthen itself. The rules should be aligned with the rules for all European competitions anyway. Now there is inequality in Europe. In the Premier League the rules are much looser than in Spain and that makes no sense at all.”

In the summer of 2021, the strict rules of LaLiga meant that Barcelona had to significantly weaken the selection in order to register all players. The biggest consequence of this was that Lionel Messi could not get a contract extension at the Spotify Camp Nou and left for Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona now hopes to continue the resurrection and, among other things, to attract a replacement for the retired Gerard Piqué during the winter transfer period. The success of that set-up therefore depends on LaLiga.
