Mark Flek will compete with SC Freiburg against Italian superpower Juventus on Thursday evening. The 29-year-old goalkeeper told in an interview with Sky Sports that he is confident that his club will come out on top on Thursday. “Juventus are one of the biggest clubs in Europe, but we can beat them. If we manage to find the form we had before the World Cup, I am convinced that we will really achieve something beautiful this season.”

The four-time the Dutch international underlines in the interview how important the match against Juventus will be. “It will be a highlight for the club, the fans and everyone involved. Of course we want to get as far as possible, but I will certainly enjoy it.” Freiburg has never reached the eighth finals of a European tournament. Thursday evening’s match in Turin will therefore be unique the Breisgau-Brasilianer. Fleks is happy that he can call himself a player of the German club. “It’s a fantastic time to play here.”

Last season, Flek was already close to winning his first prize with Freiburg. The team of trainer Christian Streich reached the final of the DFB-Pokal, but lost it 2-4 against RB Leipzig. “If I won a prize with Freiburg, I would be speechless.” According to Flek, Freiburg’s advance is due to the stability of the team. “There have been difficult times, we had to fight against relegation, but it is one big puzzle. Finally the pieces come together. We benefit from the hard work that others did years ago,” said the Limburger.

Fleks is the textbook example of a late bloomer. The closing post played in the youth at Roda JC and ended up in the Bundesliga at Freiburg via Alemannia Aachen, Greuther Fürth and MSV Duisburg. He made his debut in the Bundesliga at the age of 26. The Dutchman has already been under the bar 29 times this season and can count on even more basic places this season. Freiburg is still active in the DFB-Pokal, the Europa League and the Bundesliga. The southern German club currently occupies fifth place in the table.
