Jurgen Klopp believes that Mohamed Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be compared. At the press conference prior to the Premier League game visiting competitor Manchester United, the Liverpool coach calls the two stars both ‘world class’, but argues that everyone’s qualities lie in completely different areas. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would “choose Ronaldo in any competition”.

“Why should we compare?” Klopp wondered aloud in response to a question from the audience, although he then compares them anyway. “Both are world class. I would say that Mo’s (Salah, ed.) left foot is better, that Cristiano might be better in the air and with his right foot. As for speed, both are quick and eager for goals. But I don’t find comparisons that interesting, sorry.” Salah has scored 12 goals in 11 games in all competitions this season; Ronaldo follows with six hits from nine matches.

Colleague Solskjaer was earlier, however, a lot more outspoken in his answer. The Norwegian manager said he would “always choose Ronaldo” and that “his goalscoring oeuvre is fantastic”. Yet he had nice words for his opponent’s star player. “Salah is on fire right now, if you look at some of the goals he’s scored recently, we know we have to be wary of defending him.” Also the remainder of the vanguard of the Reds> did not remain untouched: referring to Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota, Solskjaer argued ‘to stay focused for 95 minutes to keep a clean sheet’.

With a point behind leader Chelsea (eighteen at seventeen), Liverpool hopes to stop the game next Sunday the Blues into the Premier League rankings. Manchester United are currently sixth with fourteen points and can close at the top with a win. It will be quite a task for the Mancunians, as the visiting Liverpool side is unbeaten in all competitions.
