Rafael van der Vaart hopes that Ryan Gravenberch will take his chance in the Dutch team. The Liverpool midfielder will start on Thursday evening in the friendly match against Canada and can therefore give his calling card to national coach Ronald Koeman.

“It's great for him that he is in the starting line-up,” Van der Vaart begins NOS. “I think he made the wrong choice by going to Bayern Munich, but he has the potential to be truly world-class.”

Liverpool also does not think Van der Vaart is a useful step. “If you go from Ajax to Bayern Munich and you don't play much, it is better to go to a club where you know you will make a lot of minutes. He didn't do that.”

“I once said about Quinten Timber that he could become Feyenoord's best midfielder, but then he got injured and I was laughed at. Now everyone says the same thing.”

“In the matches that Gravenberch has played you can see that he is a midfielder of our time,” Van der Vaart continues. “I think he is so good, incredible potential, but we have had a lot of players like that and you don't hear about it anymore. I hope it comes out.”

Van Hooijdonk believes that Gravenberch was lucky that Marten de Roon left the Dutch team injured. “Whoever is in luck is Koopmeiners. He did a fantastic job at Atalanta. We all saw how good he was.”

“We would really like to see that in the Dutch national team. Koopmeiners is someone who is above Gravenberch in the pecking order at the moment,” concludes Van Hooijdonk.
