Georginio Wijnaldum was welcomed like a hero at the airport of Rome. The midfielder will sign for AS Roma in the foreseeable future and arrived in the Italian capital on Thursday evening, where thousands of fans were already waiting for him. Wijnaldum was loudly sung to and he could visibly enjoy it.

Wijnaldum will soon undergo the medical examination at AS Roma and will then be taken over from Paris Saint-Germain on a rental basis. L’Equipe reports that Roma will initially take over half of Wijnaldum’s salary. That amounts to about five million euros. If the 31-year-old midfielder gives birth in Serie A, the club can definitively take him over for a transfer fee of eight million euros. The buy option could become mandatory for Roma if the Italians qualify for the Champions League group stage, or if Wijnaldum comes in at least half of all Serie A matches.

If one of those scenarios materializes, Wijnaldum will automatically be given a contract until mid-2025 in Italy. In that case, Wijnaldum’s sad period at PSG will immediately come to an end. In his first season with the Parisians, Wijnaldum mainly played as a substitute for the club. The 86-time international of the Dutch has played 38 games for PSG so far, in which he scored three times and provided three assists. The Rotterdammer hopes to regain his base place with the Dutch national team in Rome.
