Barcelona is thinking about bringing Kays Ruiz-Atil back, he assures France Football Tuesday. The eighteen-year-old midfielder left the youth academy of Barcelona in 2015 for that of Paris Saint-Germain and played seven matches in Ligue 1 this season. Because Ruiz-Atil and PSG could not reach an agreement about the extension of his expiring contract, he is by coach Mauricio Pochettino has since been reverted to the club’s Under-19.

Over the past few months, manager Alain Migliaccio had talks with club management about a new contract for his client, but PSG’s proposal was swept off the table. If there is no breakthrough in the negotiations, Ruiz-Atil can be picked up transfer-free in the summer. His situation is closely followed by Thomas Tuchel, the trainer who made his debut at PSG in September and who now works at Chelsea. Moreover, Manchester City is mentioned as an interested party from England. But Barcelona is also interested, reports France Football on the day that the top clubs from France and Spain meet in the Champions League.

Ruiz-Atil was born in Lyon, but was recruited by Barcelona at the age of seven. However, the FIFA World Football Association ruled in 2014 that Barcelona had unlawfully attracted underage players. Ruiz-Atil was therefore not allowed to play for the club for a year and returned to Paris. Later that transfer would also cause quite a stir. Football Leaks published documents in 2018 showing that PSG would have formally hired the talent’s father to facilitate the arrival of Ruiz-Atil. However, because permission had been granted by relevant authorities, the transfer was legally valid. He was and is seen as a great talent and a transfer-free return to Barcelona would therefore be painful for PSG.

Since then, the Frenchman with Moroccan roots has been working towards his debut in the first team. He made his appearance as a starting player against Lens on September 10, 2020 (1-0 defeat) and played for 67 minutes. He played as a left winger, but can also be used as a central and attacking midfielder. After his debut, Ruiz-Atil made another six raids into the competition. His last performance was on December 5th; since January 9, he is never in the selection again, due to the problematic situation surrounding his contract. He is part of the Under-19 and therefore does not belong to the group for the game with Barcelona on Tuesday evening.
