Fosu-Mensah was injured in the game against SC Freiburg on Sunday (1-2 defeat). Just before half time things went wrong for the right back. His right leg got stuck in the grass, slapping his knee. “We hope for something else, but fear a cruciate ligament injury,” said trainer Peter Bosz in the German media afterwards.

The 23-year-old defender made the switch from Manchester United to Leverkusen in January for about two million euros. He opted for a step to the Bundesliga to play more in Bosz’s team. In this way he hoped to force a place in the European Championship selection of national coach Frank de Boer, as he said last month in an interview with Kicker.

“It was my own decision to leave United”, said Fosu-Mensah, who played his last international match for the the Dutch against Portugal in March 2018 (0-3 win). “Manchester United and Solskjaer were good for me, but for me it is important to play regularly. Also to get a chance in the national team. ” After Julian Baumgartlinger and Paulinho, Fosu-Mensah is the third Leverkusen player to be sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury.
