For Delano van Crooij, the match between VVV-Venlo and Ajax (0-13) was one to never remember. He is the first goalkeeper in the history of the Eredivisie to get the ball out of the goal no fewer than thirteen times. Afterwards some Ajax players tried to cheer up the goalkeeper. For example, fellow goalkeeper André Onana put his arm comfortably around Van Crooij’s shoulders and spoke encouragingly to him.

However, Van Crooij now wonders whether Onana’s action was genuine. After all, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar told that the goalkeeper of Ajax wanted to take the penalty kick from which the attacker eventually made the 0-10. “If you already have one or two in it, it’s a different story. Then it is fun for the keeper. But just score goals first ”, said Huntelaar, who scored two, afterwards in conversation with FOX Sports On.

In conversation with the NOS Van Crooij says that Onana’s gesture gives him mixed feelings. “Yes, when you hear that he actually wanted to take a penalty against me, you think: was his action genuine? You don’t take a penalty against another keeper if you respect him ”, the goalkeeper of the North Limburgers emphasizes. “It would have been humiliating.”

Opposite The Telegraph Onana indicated that afterwards he is happy that not he but Huntelaar took the penalty. “It is good for Klaas’ feeling. And it would not have been wise if I had stepped forward, ”the Cameroonian admits frankly. “That would be humiliating for VVV and that is not good.”

Van Crooij could be brief about the match against Ajax. “It cannot be described. You don’t really feel anything, that’s the bad thing I guess. You are mentally broken, you want to leave. Everyone means well, but you don’t want pity. ” Van Crooij became the first keeper on Saturday to make ten saves in an Eredivisie game this season.

VVV never received so many goals against in an official game. The previous negative club record was ten goals against in a Eerste Divisie match with FC Eindhoven in 1964 (10-1). VVV’s previous biggest Eredivisie defeat was an 8-1 against AZ in August 1978 until Saturday.
