The eighteen Eredivisie clubs together received more than eleven million euros in wage subsidy from the Dutch government in NOW-3, from October to December last year. This emerged on Monday from the UWV register for the third period of the support scheme.

The NOW (Temporary Emergency Bridging Measure for Employment) is intended for employers who are faced with a substantial loss of turnover as a result of the corona virus. They can submit an application to the UWV for a contribution towards wage costs and receive an advance for this. In the third period, Ajax received the highest advance of all Eredivisie clubs: 2,893,161 euros. Feyenoord (1,282,677 euros) and PSV (860,604 euros) complete the podium.

In the previous period, from July to September, PSV received the highest amount: 2,566,920 euros. Ajax repaid the advance received at the time, because it was not entitled to the amount due to outgoing transfers. AZ and Fortuna Sittard are missing from the UWV’s list of advances for the third period. In a response to the NOS both clubs state that they have not submitted an application because they are not entitled to the third NOW scheme.

Clubs from the Kitchen Champion Division received a total of approximately two million euros, considerably less than the more than 4.5 million euros that the clubs in NOW-2 received. In the first period, it was still five million euros. NAC Breda (386,883 euros), NEC (249,546) and De Graafschap (235,860) complete the podium.

The numbers behind ‘NOW’ represent the various application periods in the year; the first period ran from March to May and is known as NOW-1. During that period, clubs from the Eredivisie received a total of approximately 25 million euros. In NOW-2, more than 20 million euros was paid out and in NOW-3 it was almost half. One reason for the difference could be that the allowance has been reduced from a maximum of ninety percent of the wage costs to a maximum of eighty percent.
