Paul Pogba no longer wants to play for the national team of France, the Arab claims 195sports Monday. According to the news website, Pogba’s decision has to do with the aftermath of the murder of Samuel Paty, a teacher beheaded on the street a week and a half ago in the French town of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine.

Pogba and the Football Association of France (FFF) have not yet responded to the reporting. It is therefore not clear at the moment whether he will indeed end his international career. Paty, a history and social education teacher, was the victim of a terror attack. He was killed by an 18-year-old man on his walk home from school, for showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in a lesson on freedom of speech.

After the assassination, France posthumously awarded the National Order of the Legion of Honor to Paty, the highest and most important French national decoration. According to reports, Pogba, a Muslim himself, was strongly against this. In addition, he would be offended by the statements made by President Emmanuel Macron after the attack. Macron said, among other things, that Paty was murdered “because Islamists want our future.” Earlier this month he described Islam as a “religion in crisis.”

“Unity and determination are the only answer to the monstrous Islamic terror,” Macron added. Pogba would see the statements and the award for Paty as an attack on himself and other French Muslims. The midfielder made his debut for the national team of France in 2013 and has played 72 caps, scoring 10 times. Pogba was among the selection of les Bleus who won the World Cup in 2018.
