With Jaïro Riedewald at Crystal Palace, a Dutchman was kicking off next to Veltman. Patrick van Aanholt stayed on the bench with the visitors throughout the match. Brighton had the best of the game in the first half, but still went into halftime behind. In the 28th minute, Jordan Ayew reached the end line on the right and his low cross was worked in by Jean-Philippe Mateta with a beautiful heel movement.

Ten minutes after the break, Veltman did something back. The right back had come up with him and saw a low cross, half turned off, land at his feet. Veltman did not hesitate and brushed the ball in hard with the left: 1-1. It turned out not to be enough for Brighton, because in the fifth minute of injury time, Christian Benteke made the winning on behalf of Cryatal Palace, by cleverly filling in a high cross from Andrew Townsend: 1-2.
