Despite his first Premier League goal ever, Joël Veltman has a bad taste in the duel with Crystal Palace (1-2 loss). The Brighton & Hove Albion defender was accurate at the highest level in England for the first time on Monday evening, but spilled expensive points in the fight against relegation. According to the Dutchman, his team should never have lost the game.

Veltman, who can count on a weekly base spot on the right flank at Brighton, brought his team to the same level ten minutes after the break, but had to watch how the visitors took the victory deep in injury time. “The first half wasn’t our best game, but their goal still came out of nowhere. In the second half I thought we responded well. We deserved the three points, it feels like we have been robbed ”, the 27-time Oranje-international says in a reaction on the club website.

“I heard we had 52 touches in their penalty area and they had 5 in our penalty area. It’s incredible, but they get away with it, ”said Veltman, who, with Brighton as number sixteen in the Premier League, is four points separate from the places that mean relegation at the end of the ride. “We did not complete the opportunities we got. They didn’t even have a one hundred percent chance, but Benteke scored. It was a nice goal, but we got a lot of chances and we have to score more. ”

Crystal Palace took the lead after half an hour of play via Jean-Philippe Mateta, after which Christian Benteke carried out the verdict for the visitors in the final minute. There was certainly no question of a jubilant mood at Veltman afterwards. “I would rather not have scored and took three points instead of scoring and losing.” It marked the first defeat for Brighton since January 13, when the team went down 1-0 on a visit to Manchester City. On Saturday, manager Graham Potter’s team will visit number penultimate West Bromwich Albion.
