Besiktas did not make a mistake in the battle for the Turkish national title on Thursday afternoon. The leader of the Süper Lig was 1-4 too strong for Karagümrük, the number eight in the competition. The team of trainer Sergen Yalcin ran to a 0-4 lead in the second half, after which Fabio Borini saved the honor for the home team in the final phase.
Besiktas has been unbeaten in competition since December 13, but stumbled over Hatayspor (2-2) last week. Due to the loss of points, the competition crept closer and Fenerbahçe even reached the same level in points. On Thursday afternoon, it did not seem for a moment that Besiktas was going to lose points, although the 0-1 only came on the scoreboard just before half-time. Vincent Aboubakar signed for the opening goal on a pass from Georges-Kevin N’Koudou. N’Koudou had good individual action and brought Aboubakar into position, who finished face to face with goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.
The visitors came out of the dressing room well and went in search of the 0-2. The second goal of the afternoon was not long in coming. Five minutes after the break it was Bernard Mensah who scored on behalf of Besiktas. The midfielder fumbled past a number of defenders and rounded off from the edge of the penalty area. Fifteen minutes later it was 0-3 by Canadian attacker Cyle Larin. After an attack from the left flank, he pushed the ball against the ropes on a pass from Ridvan Yilmaz.
Karagümrük had nothing more to say and had to sit by and watch Mensah make his second of the afternoon twenty minutes before time. He passed several defenders of the home team and eventually scored from the rebound. Karagümrük could do something back from eleven meters after a foul by Besiktas-back Valentin Rosier on Badou Ndiaye. The penalty kick was cashed in by Borini, who thus determined the final score. Fenerbahçe can tie up with Besiktas again later in the day if it beats Sivasspor (5pm)
