AZ failed to reach the final of the Conference League on Thursday evening. At home, the 0-1 defeat against West Ham United was not enough to compensate for the 2-1 defeat from the first game. Afterwards, it was mainly about the disturbances that took place in the main stand after the final whistle. Supporters of AZ sought confrontation there with supporters of opponent West Ham United.

The box included friends and relatives of West Ham players. Tomás Soucek, among others, seemed to intervene and deal blows to the Alkmaar fans, because a number of family members were attacked. “Those are just fools. I don’t get it”, was the reaction of Tijjani Reijnders ESPN. “Of course there is emotion involved, but what else can you say about it. Again they are really fools, I have no further words for it.

Captain Jordy Clasie was not aware of the disturbances after the final whistle. “I got there quite late. I am disappointed, but I am now more with the game in my head,” said the midfielder Veronica. AZ coach Pascal Jansen said he was ashamed of the riots that broke out in the AFAS Stadium. “It’s annoying, it doesn’t belong in our stadium. Preferably in no stadium. I feel shame. People will have experienced frightening moments. You still have to control your emotions, even on a night of defeat.”

Finally, Pantelis Hatzidiakos said he was shocked by the storming of the main stand by AZ fans. “Very sad. My family was up there. I just had contact with them. They were shaking. I don’t even call those people AZ supporters. It’s pathetic what they did. Just come and watch and cheer us on. Stay otherwise just at home if you have such intentions.”
