Bryan Ruiz has invited his old team FC Twente for a farewell match in his home country of Costa Rica, the Tukkers report via the official channels. The now 37-year-old attacking midfielder plays for Liga Deportivo Alajuelense this season and will say goodbye to professional football on December 17. The farewell match will be played between FC Twente and his current team, where he also started his career.

The Costa Rican had his best years of his career between 2009 and 2011 in Enschede and won one national title, one KNVB Cup and twice the Johan Cruijff Scale in the Grolsch Veste. In the championship year, he also became top scorer with 24 goals. Ron Jans is proud that Ruiz invited his team to the game. “It is a great honor to be able to play Ruiz’s farewell match,” says the FC Twente trainer on the club website.

“Together with his club, Bryan invited us to come to Costa Rica, he has meant a lot to FC Twente. It emphasizes the special bond he has with the club.” During the winter break, which has been brought forward this year because of this winter’s world championship in Qatar, FC Twente will also organize a training camp in Costa Rica between 12 and 22 December. The farewell match will be played on December 17.

After his successful years in Enschede, Ruiz moved to Fulham in the summer of 2011 for twelve million euros, for which he played more than a hundred games. In January of 2014, he was kept on a rental basis at PSV for six months. A year later, he left for Sporting Portugal, after which he ended his career at Liga Deportivo Alajuelense after an intermediate step at the Brazilian Santos. Ruiz has played no fewer than 143 international matches for his home country, in which he scored 29 goals. The veteran qualified with Costa Rica via the play-offs for the upcoming World Cup, where the country will face Spain, Germany and Japan in the group stage.
