The pressure on manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has increased considerably at Rangers. The Scottish top club not only lost the last Champions League match against Ajax (1-3), but also went down last weekend to visit middle engine Saint-Johnstone (2-1). Some of the supporters are already crying out for the 47-year-old Rotterdammer’s dismissal, although he is still combative himself.

Rangers fans are now demanding that the last two games before the break of the competition be won. The gap with leader Celtic is already seven points. Van Bronckhorst understands well that the fans are angry at the moment. “It’s hard not to be aware of it. I know how it works in football. I am 47 years old and have been walking around for a few years. It’s not a problem for me,” said the manager during a press conference.

The fact that things are going a bit less does not mean that Van Bronckhorst no longer has confidence in his own leadership at Rangers. “Of course I can turn the tide. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here. My job is to win games.” He is well aware that his credit may also run out. “No manager is safe if he doesn’t win games. Why should it be any different for me?”

On Wednesday, the Rangers play at Ibrox against Hearts, after which an away game at Saint-Mirren awaits on Saturday. Van Bronckhorst refuses to look further than Hearts. “My focus is completely on Wednesday. That’s what it’s about. Then we look at the weekend.” The European adventure of the Gers is already over and delivered the team of Van Bronckhorst a painful record: Rangers is officially the worst club ever in the group stage of the Champions League.
