Barcelona was linked to Manchester United on Monday in Nyon, Switzerland for the intermediate round of the Europa League. The Catalans, who finished third in the Champions League group, will go on the hunt for European rehabilitation in a spring diptych. The first matches will be played on February 16, 2023. The returns will take place a week later.
Before the knockout phase of the Europa League starts, there is first an intermediate round. In it, the eight numbers three from the Champions League will compete against the eight numbers two from the group stage of the Europa League. Barcelona belonged to the first category, while opponent Manchester United was already active in the second European club tournament.
Xavi’s team already knew where it stood after the fifth group match in the Champions League. Barcelona could then still equalize in points with number two of Group C Inter, but had to lose it on the basis of mutual results. As a result, the curtain fell for the Catalans in the billion-dollar ball, just like last season in the group stage. In the draw for the intermediate round of the Europa League, Barça was linked to Erik ten Hag’s team on Monday afternoon.
Manchester United failed to become group winners in the Europa League last Thursday. Man United had to win by two goals at a visit to Real Sociedad, but in the end did not go further than 0-1. United finished in second place in Group E on the basis of a less goal difference than Sociedad and was therefore sentenced to play the intermediate round.
