Alejandro Garnacho will not make his debut for the national team of Argentina for the time being. The Manchester United attacker was called up by national coach Lionel Scaloni for the friendly international matches against Panama (March 23) and Curaçao (March 28), but did not come out of the duel with Southampton unscathed. Garnacho has sustained an ankle injury that will keep him out for at least a few weeks.

It should have been a very nice month for Garnacho. After his important goal in the cup match against West Ham United (3-1), he hoped to play for his native country for the first time later this month. A week and a half ago it was announced that the Argentinian had been included in the selection for the exhibition games against Panama and Curaçao, but his debut is forced to wait.

Last weekend, Garnacho was so injured in the home game against Southampton (0-0) after a duel with Kyle Walker-Peters that he has been sidelined for several weeks with an ankle injury. Further investigation must reveal exactly how long he will be out of circulation, but it is certain that Garnacho will see the Europa League return against Real Betis (Thursday) and the FA Cup match with Fulham (Sunday) go up in smoke, just like the international matches with Argentina.

“Unfortunately I will not be able to help my team and team-mates in the upcoming games, in a very important part of the season for Manchester United,” the attacker said on Instagram. “I am disappointed that I also miss the opportunity to be with my teammates from the Argentina national team in what was supposed to be a great and proud moment for me and my family. It is difficult to put into words how I feel right now. “
