Dick Lukkien will be the new trainer of FC Groningen from next season, as assured Football International Sunday. The fifty-year-old trainer will sign a multi-year contract with his new club. Lukkien, who previously worked as a youth coach in Groningen and will succeed interim coach Dennis van der Ree, has an expiring contract at FC Emmen and can therefore make the transfer free of charge this summer.
Lukkien is currently the longest-serving Dutch coach in professional football. The intended new coach of Groningen has been associated with Emmen since mid-2016. He guided the club from Drenthe to the Eredivisie for the first time in club history in 2018. Emmen was relegated in 2021, only to return to the highest level in the Netherlands a year later. Lukkien’s team currently occupies fifteenth place in the Eredivisie, two places higher than Groningen.
The board of Groningen already ended up with Lukkien during the winter break, who was then held to his contract by the management of Emmen. It is the intention that the coach will still transfer to Groningen in a few months, although the question is whether the Pride of the North next season in the Eredivisie. The low flyer will play the derby of the north against sc Heerenveen this Sunday.
Groningen teamed up with Frank Wormuth last summer, but he was fired after a few months. The German believes that he has been treated badly by the club management and demands one million euros for image damage. Wormuth believes he is also entitled to a share of any amounts he could have earned from bonuses during his employment. A final court decision will follow at a later date.
