Thijs Dallinga has put an end to his goal drought in Ligue 1. The Toulouse striker equalized against Stade Rennes, scoring his first goal since August 21. Yet his team, which also included Branco van den Boomen, Zakaria Aboukhlal and Stijn Spierings, went down 2-1. With the win, Rennes solidifies its third place, while Toulouse remains in twelfth.

The home team tried to find the openings in the opening phase, especially through Adrien Truffert, although the team of trainer Bruno Genesio initially failed to do so. After more than fifteen minutes of play, Aboukhlal showed himself. The winger, who came over from AZ this summer, made good space for himself on the edge of the sixteen-meter area, but then saw his shot go wide. Rennes kept pushing and rewarded himself after 25 minutes through Benjamin Bourigeaud.

The striker received the ball from Lovro Majer and was able to find the far corner uncovered: 1-0. A nice long shot from Martin Terrier almost led to the 2-0 moments later, were it not for Maxime Dupé’s ability to tap the ball from under the crossbar. On the other side, Aboukhlal was once again menacing, but saw his header turned by Steve Mandanda. Ten minutes before halftime, Dallinga could have scored the equalizer. However, the former striker of Excelsior saw his header from a good cross fly just wide of the post.

After the break, Dupé again showed his class on an attempt by Majer, after which Van den Boomen was close to the equalizer on the other side. The midfielder shot beautifully from a distance, but saw Mandanda have an equally nice answer. Still, Toulouse was able to cheer a few minutes later. A smart pass from Rasmus Nicolaisen after a corner kick from Van den Boomen ended up at Dallinga, who saw his shot in the middle of the goal fly against the ropes: 1-1.

Still, that didn’t seem to bother Rennes. After Hamari Traoré only just shot over, it was hit in the ensuing attack. Arnaud Kalimuendo was able to tap in the rebound, after Dupé didn’t handle Terrier’s shot well: 2-1. Fares Chaibi and Ado Onaiwu were still close to 2-2 on behalf of Toulouse, but both players found outstanding Mandanda in their path.
