Cody Gakpo does not yet know how serious the injury is that he sustained on Thursday evening against AS Monaco (1-2 loss). The left striker of PSV had to be replaced by an ankle injury in the lost Europa League match after more than an hour and is therefore a doubt for Sunday’s top match against Ajax.

Gakpo went into a header in his own half and ended up unlucky. “I landed wrong with my ankle”, the 22-year-old PSV attacker told ESPN. “It did hurt me. It didn’t really go away. I tried to walk out, but that didn’t really work. Then you have to go to the side.”

The question is whether Gakpo has recovered in time for Sunday’s Eredivisie squatter against Ajax. “I can’t say anything about that yet. We still have to deal with and assess it,” says the wing striker, who scored PSV’s only goal. “Hopefully it’s all going to be okay.” Jan Joost van Gangelen moves into the studio of ESPN then his own conclusion: “I say: it’s not that bad. He will just participate next Sunday,” said the presenter.

PSV also lost Noni Madueke. The right winger grabbed his hamstring just before Gakpo fell out and does not seem to be able to make it to the match against Ajax given the nature of those kinds of injuries.
