Bruno Fernandes is definitely the maker of the 1-0 for Portugal during the World Cup meeting with Uruguay. The attacking midfielder scooped a ball in front of the goal and it seemed to be hit in the far corner by Cristiano Ronaldo, but it now appears that the attacker did not hit the ball. Thanks to the chip in the ball, FIFA knows for sure that not Ronaldo, but Fernandes is the goal scorer.

Adidas, the manufacturer of the ball, has informed the world football association that there is a definite answer. “Based on a lack of deflection during our measurements, no external contact was measured,” the German company describes the situation after Fernandes passed the ball. “The sensor in the ball has given us the ability to analyze very precisely.” The technique therefore definitively deprives Ronaldo of a goal, because FIFA takes over the advice of Adidas.

That will not sit well with the Portuguese, as he continued to claim during and after the game that he was the goal scorer. He claimed to have hit the ball and continued to insist that he had scored after the game. That led to hilarity during the press conference, because national coach Fernando Santos had a good laugh at the questions about whether the goal was scored by Ronaldo or not.

Fernandes himself also thought that Ronaldo had made him and understands that his captain wants the 1-0 to his name at all costs. “Goals are important for players like him,” the Manchester United midfielder said. “I also celebrated as if he made it, because I had the feeling that Cristiano was still touching my cross. It was also my intention to play him. In the end, the most important thing is that we are through to the next round.”
