Karim Benzema’s house was broken into on Sunday, while he was playing on behalf of Real Madrid against Elche (2-2), Spanish media reported. For the French attacker it was in any case a day to forget quickly, because he forgot the Royal took the lead from 11 yards in the LaLiga game, before having to leave the field in the 58th minute due to a thigh injury.

Sources close to the investigation confirmed to the Spanish news agency EFE that the burglary happened between 3 and 7 p.m. It’s not the first time Benzema’s home has been targeted by burglars. In February 2019, the home of the 94-time France international was broken into while he was playing with Real in el Classico in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey.

A number of football players have been broken into in Madrid in recent years, while the relevant players were playing for their club. For example, burglaries took place at Benzama’s teammates Casemiro, Isco and Lucas Vázquez. In September 2019, Casemiro’s wife and daughter were at home when his home was broken into. Two days later, a similar break-in occurred at former Atlético Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey, where his housekeeper was threatened.

Real Madrid crawled through the eye of the needle against Elche on Sunday. From eleven meters, Benzema failed to shoot his team at 1-0 (see below). The French attacker fired over. It was his first ever missed penalty in La Liga. He managed to use thirteen previous penalty kicks. Partly due to his miss, Real was heading for a 1-2 defeat at home, but in injury time Éder Militão still pulled out a draw for the Madrilenians.
