Bayern Munich was crowned champion of Germany for the eleventh time in a row during a blistering final day of the Bundesliga on Saturday. The Record Master won 1-2 against 1. FC Köln thanks to a late goal by substitute Jamal Musiala. Borussia Dortmund needed a win for the championship against FSV Mainz 05 at home, but failed to draw 2-2.

Despite the fact that Köln was tenth at the start of the last round, coach Steffen Baumgart’s team still had something to play against Bayern. According to German media, Köln could expect a substantial bonus if not Bayern Munich, but Borussia Dortmund won the Bundesliga on Saturday. The bonus had everything to do with a clause in the contract of Anthony Modeste, who made the switch from Köln to Dortmund last summer. If the striker became champion with his new club, Köln would receive ‘an amount with six zeros’.

However, Bayern, with Ryan Gravenberch, Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch in the starting line-up, was soon on course for the title. The spell was broken after just eight minutes by Kingsley Coman, who was played on the edge of the box and then managed to curl the ball into the long corner: 0-1. Thomas Müller was close to doubling the margin after this, but his header hit the post. Bayern supporters at the RheinEnergieStadion couldn’t believe their luck a few minutes later when they heard that Dortmund was 0-2 behind at home.

The Record Master thought he could go to the dressing rooms with a 2-0 lead, after Leroy Sané managed to find the net from a combination with Serge Gnabry. However, the attacker got the ball shot into his arm from close range earlier in the attack. After the intervention of the VAR, it was reason for referee Sven Jablonski to reject the second Bavarian goal. Where the tension increased by the minute after the break, the game of both teams did not get much better. Thomas Tuchel knew that a draw was not enough for his side to secure the championship and kept the defensive ranks closed.

From a corner kick there was almost 1-1 out of nowhere with an hour on the clock. Davie Selke convincingly headed towards goal, where Yann Sommer kept Bayern going with a reflex. Ten minutes before the end, the score was still balanced by the home team. Jablonksi awarded a penalty to Köln after Gnabry made a hand in his own box. Dejan Ljubicic stayed cool from eleven meters and sent Sommer into the wrong corner: 1-1. Sané then failed to make it 1-2, but substitute Musiala still brought Bayern into ecstasy by sliding the winning goal into the long corner later in the attack.
