Ronald Araújo has brushed aside Barcelona’s offer to extend his contract, reports say marca Tuesday. The contract extension of the centre-back is reported to be a top priority for the club, but at the same time, given the limited financial resources, the Catalans know that it will be difficult to meet the wishes of the 22-year-old Uruguayan. Araújo has now rejected Barca’s first official offer.

Since last week, the parties have been discussing breaking the contract, which will expire in mid-2023. Barcelona previously indicated that they would like to continue with the Araújo, who, however, see nothing in the first offer that los Azulgrana have done. According to the Spanish sports newspaper, the refusal does not mean that the talks will be stopped. The representatives of Araújo and the club have agreed to meet again “sometime in the coming days”.

Araújo earns according to ASH currently ‘only’ 900,000 thousand euros, a salary that is considerably lower than the other center defenders of Barcelona. Araújo puts himself in line with the other central defenders who earn much more. Central defenders like Clément Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti have much higher salaries and have been less prominent in the last two years. The Uruguayan would like to see the club’s appreciation on his pay slip.

marca Earlier reported that several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United, are closely monitoring developments surrounding Araújo’s contract negotiations. Director Mateu Alemany knows that outside interest is not bolstering the club’s negotiating position, and Barcelona can no longer make disproportionate offers due to the tight salary margin.
