Barcelona’s Extraordinary General Assembly on Saturday approved almost unanimously plans to renovate the Camp Nou for €1.5 billion. At the members’ meeting there were no fewer than 405 votes in favor and only 21 against; six people voted blank. Due to the decision of the members’ meeting, the socios of the Spanish top club will soon be able to express themselves in a referendum about Espai Barça, as the project is called.

The Barcelona stadium and its training facilities are seriously outdated. Under the reign of President Joan Laporta, who took charge of the Catalans this year, renovation plans have been revived. Barcelona plans to borrow no less than 1.5 billion euros and thereby completely renew the Camp Nou, among other things. In the modernized stadium, all supporters will be covered, while currently only the main stand is covered.

It was already announced on Tuesday that Barcelona expects to collect 200 million euros extra annually with the renewed Camp Nou. That extra income must come from sponsorship agreements (48 million euros), business seats (48 million euros), normal match tickets (44 million euros) and organizing events and museum visits (60 million euros).

With the income, Barça hopes to be able to repay the astronomical loan of 1.5 billion euros within 35 years. The loan is reportedly being re-issued by Goldman Sachs. The American bank already guaranteed a loan of 525 million euros in June to continue to pay the salaries of the players.
