Angeliño has spoken out strongly about Pep Guardiola. The 24-year-old left back of RB Leipzig did not feel any confidence from the Spanish manager at Manchester City. “Pep “killed” me and my self-confidence, “Angeliño said BILD.

In 2013, Angeliño made the switch from Deportivo La Coruña youth academy to Manchester City. The fullback was rented out several times and sold to PSV in 2018, with a buyback option. After his successful season in Eindhoven, Manchester City decided to buy back Angeliño in the summer of 2019 for twelve million euros.

“When I came back to City, Pep judged me on two games in preparation. After that he didn’t give me a real chance,” said Angeliño, who was only allowed to compete six times in the first half of the season and was rented to Leipzig in January 2020. “I was happy that I was allowed to go to Germany on a rental basis and that I am now even owned by the club.” Leipzig paid a rent of two million euros for Angeliño in the winter of 2020 and extended the rental period in the summer that followed. In the meantime, Angeliño has become permanently owned by Leipzig via a purchase option in that agreement for eighteen million euros.

With Julian Nagelsmann, the Leipzig coach, Angeliño has a much better relationship than with Guardiola. “The difference? One gives me confidence and lets me play, and the other doesn’t,” the Spaniard explains. “In Leipzig I felt confidence from day one. The club and the coach gave me an incredible boost. I am now happy to play every week in Leipzig.”
