Marc Overmars has opened talks with Newcastle United, reports the Daily Mirror. The director of football affairs of Ajax is reportedly in the picture to hold the same position at the Premier League club. According to the tabloid, two intermediaries on behalf of the Magpies contacted Overmars, who is reportedly interested in moving to St James’ Park after being told he will be given the means to “wake up a sleeping giant”.

The mirror writes on the basis of Dutch sources that Overmars is open to the position in England and wants to take Ajax coach Erik ten Hag with him. Valentijn Driessen wrote in his column this week The Telegraph all that Overmars would poll Ten Hag when he is appointed in England. “It is plausible that Newcastle Ajax will want to pay compensation to make the switch go smoothly,” it sounds from England. “Personal conditions will not be a problem.”

Overmars is not the only candidate at Newcastle United, which this month came into the hands of a very rich investment fund from Saudi Arabia. Luis Campos, sporting director of Lille OSC, and Michael Edwards of Liverpool are also in the picture. The latter will leave Anfield after this season. According to Driessen, Overmars earns 700,000 euros per year in Amsterdam. In Newcastle, according to English reports, he can quadruple his salary.

“A starvation wage compared to his colleagues at the top”, Driessen wrote about Overmars’ Ajax salary. “The meager reward applies to Ten Hag just as well. Unless the private situation does not allow it, an upgrade by Ajax will not outweigh an adventure in Newcastle. Even the struggling Barcelona and Arsenal – they previously unsuccessfully pulled Overmars – are in the shadows. For example, immediately after one of the most beautiful European evenings this century, Ajax is confronted with an uncertain future in terms of technical leadership”, says Driessen.
